2) Launch of New Researcher Development Programme

A date for your diary: 8-9 September 2008 - Annual researcher development conference

The next annual conference for staff supporting the professional skills and career development of PhD students and early-career researchers will be held in London at the Novotel London West Hotel on 8 and 9 September 2008.

Marking the official launch of the new 'researcher development' programme, this two day conference will reflect the broader remit of the new programme being funded by the Research Councils. The conference will build on the success of the previous UK GRAD and UKHERD conferences, and bring together both agendas in relation to the personal and professional development of postgraduate researchers and research staff.

Further information and booking details will be available in the coming months. www.grad.ac.uk

3) Enterprise Fellowships: Developing the commercial potential of your research

BBSRC and The Royal Society of Edinburgh seek proposals to the Enterprise Fellowships scheme to support researchers who wish to play a key role in the commercialisation of their research. The Fellowships provide salary and formal business training, allowing the Fellows to focus on developing the commercial potential of their research over a 12-month period.

The Fellowships are available to academic staff, research staff and postgraduates with relevant experience employed by a UK Higher Education Institution or a BBSRC-sponsored Research Institute. The business idea may be in any area within BBSRC's remit provided the original research was largely funded through the Research Council.

The closing date for applications is 5pm on 4 April 2008. Interviews for selected applicants will take place in Edinburgh on 3 June 2008, with a view to the Fellowship commencing October 2008.

Application forms and further details are available from: www.royalsoced.org.uk/research_fellowships/bbsrc.htm and www.bbsrc.ac.uk/business/commercialisation/enterprise_fellowships.html or by contacting Dr Simon Cutler,

4) Royal Society Industry Fellowships: Promoting knowledge exchange between academia and industry

The Industry Fellowship scheme promotes collaboration between the UK science base and industry by supporting the exchange of mid-career researchers either from the science base to industry or vice-versa. The Fellowships are administered by the Royal Society and co-sponsored by the BBSRC. The scheme has successfully supported researchers in the biosciences and has involved a range of industry sectors, from large pharmaceutical companies to Biotech SMEs.

The deadline for applications to the current round of funding is 13 March 2008 with further details here or by contacting Adam Webb, Email: adam.webb@bbsrc.ac.uk, Tel: 01793 413390

5) Modular Training for Industry

Modular Training for Industry enables UK Higher Education Institutions and BBSRC-sponsored Institutes to provide up to date, industrially-relevant technical training for graduates working in industry. Pump-priming support is provided for the development of individual training modules at Masters level. Evidence of a clear industrial need for the training is a key requirement of funding. Therefore the training should be developed in close collaboration with industry.

The next closing date for applications is 28 April 2008. Application forms and further details can be found at: www.bbsrc.ac.uk/business/training/index.html , or by contacting Adam Webb, Email: modular.training@bbsrc.ac.uk, Tel: 01793 413390.

7) Updated FAQs for BBSRC Training Grants

BBSRC has issued updated Frequently Asked Questions for its Doctoral Training Grants (DTGs) and Masters Training Grants (MTGs). A number of cosmetic changes have been made to bring terminology in line with current practice (for example, the 'Funding Assurance Programme' now replaces the RCUK Dipstick Visit audit process).

The new versions also incorporate a cross-council statement on the entitlement of students funded from Training Grants to receive stipend support during periods of maternity leave, and the Councils' expectation for these costs to be met from the Training Grant (see FAQ 3.7 of the DTG FAQs and 3.6 in the MTG FAQs).

The updated versions are on the BBSRC website at: http://www.bbsrc.ac.uk/funding/studentships/dtg_faqs.pdf - the DTG FAQs http://www.bbsrc.ac.uk/funding/studentships/mtg_faqs.pdf - the MTG FAQs
